1) Wilbur Scoville developed the Scoville scale in 1912 to measure the hotness of chili peppers. A bell pepper registers a zero on the scale, a typical jalapeƱo falls between 2,500 and 8,000 Scoville heat units (SHUs), and the Naga Jolokia is the hottest chili in the world at 1,040,000 SHU's (OUCH!!).

2) Friedrich Mohs developed the Mohs scale in 1812 to measure the hardness of minerals. Talc registers a 1 and a diamond is a 10 while cubic zirconia (zirconium dioxide - ZrO2) is an 8.

3) The Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale is a classification used to measure hurricane strength. Hurricanes are divided into five categories depending on their sustained wind intensities. Prior to 1979, all North Atlantic hurricanes had women's names but in 1979 men's names were introduced.

4) In 1805, British Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort developed one of the first wind speed scales to help sailors estimate the winds using visual observations. 0 (Calm) is described as "Sea like a mirror"and 12 (Hurricane) is described as "The air is filled with foam and spray. Sea completely white with driving spray; visibility very seriously affected" - So it was before Jim Cantore and the Weather Channel.
